At Fishburne Military School, learning opportunities don’t end when the class day (or even school year) ends.
This week, FMS History Instructor Chief Warrant Officer Phillip Lacey returned home from a very special trip with a number of his students, retracing the Western Front of World War II.
Chief Lacey traveled with 13 Cadets and Alumnus Chuck Wilson ’73 (Grandfather of Cadet Wilson) through London, Plymouth, Caen, Normandy, Rouen, Paris, Bastogne, Cologne, and Berlin in honor of the 75th Anniversary of D-Day.
The group spent ten days visiting major points of interest, touring historically significant sites and paying their respects at various memorials.
“Trips like this provide an amazing opportunity for our young men to put their classroom lessons into a deeper context and come away with a far greater understanding of and appreciation for the events that shaped our world today,” noted FMS Superintendent CAPTAIN Mark Black, US Navy (Ret.).

Celebrating 100 years as a US Army JROTC unit, Fishburne Military School is the oldest and smallest of all military schools for boys in Virginia. Its college-prep curriculum is built on the structure of an Army JROTC program. FMS has been designated as a JROTC Honor Unit with Distinction and may nominate qualified candidates to the United States Service Academies. Fishburne hosts one of only four Summer JROTC programs in the nation that is accredited by US Army Cadet Command.
